Alice Springs topped both lists, with 96.5 per cent of its arrivals on time and 94.2 per cent of its departures on time, according to the Domestic airline on time performance January 2016 report released by the federal Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics.

For flights to and from Dubbo City Regional Airport, Regional Express (Rex) outperformed rival airline QantasLink when it came to its percentage of on-time arrivals and departures.

On the Dubbo to Sydney route, QantasLink flew all of its scheduled 109 flights in January, with 71.6 per cent of them arriving and departing on time. On that same route, five of Rex’s 84 scheduled flights were cancelled. Of those that went ahead, 65 (82.3 per cent) arrivals were on time and 69 (87.3 per cent) departures were on time.

On the Sydney to Dubbo route in January, none of QantasLink’s 110 scheduled flights were cancelled while five of Rex’s 85 scheduled flights were cancelled. On that route, 68.2 per cent of QantasLink’s arrivals were on time, as were 65.5 per cent of its departures. Rex arrivals were on time in 91.3 per cent of cases, and its departures were on time in 92.5 per cent of cases.

Other top performers for their percentage of on time arrivals were Mount Isa (94.7), Kalgoorlie (92.8), Proserpine and Moranbah (92.7), Port Lincoln (91.5), Newman (91.4), Darwin (90.2), Hamilton Island (90) and Bundaberg (89.9).

When it came to the highest percentage of on-time departures, Alice Springs was followed by Moranbah (93.7), Kalgoorlie (93.6), Mount Isa (93.4), Port Lincoln (92.6), Karratha (91.7), Newman (91.4), Bundaberg (91.2), Port Hedland (90.1) and Darwin (89.9).

The airport with the lowest percentage of on-time arrivals was Port Macquarie (65 per cent), while Sunshine Coast airport recorded the lowest percentage of on-time departures (64.9 per cent).

The figures in the report referred to reported routes and did not necessarily cover all flights to and from the airport, including for routes on which the passenger load averaged fewer than 8000 passengers per month across the previous six months and when fewer than two airlines operated in competition on a route.
