Trainer’s Taree hand

Trainer Cliff Bashford will have multiple runners lining up in Taree’s $100,000 Country Championships Qualifier (1400m) on Sunday with leading chances Ocean Grand and Ever So Natural.

Ocean Grand defeated record-breaking Scone Country Championships winner Clearly Innocent in a TAB Highway Handicap at Rosehill Gardens in December.

While Clearly Innocent’s victory made most Country Championships final hopefuls shy, it only validated Bashford’s opinion on the son of Duporth.

“Yes, our horse beat him in December but in all honesty that horse (Clearly Innocent) has improved and appreciates the 1400m,” he said.

Speaking on Ocean Grand’s chances this weekend, Bashford hopes the rain stays away as the horse is best on fast ground. But he was quick to note the horse’s city form and the role the TAB Highway Handicaps have played in maturing the progressive four-year-old.

“He is the best credentialed horse in the race. We have taken our time with him since he was a late foal (December) and had a few issues that prevented him being sold to Hong Kong. It will be great just to have a runner in the final.”

Ocean Grand is not the only in-form horse in the stable.

Stablemate Ever So Natural has won twice at Taree and hasin-form Blake Spriggs declared to ride. The horse has three wins and four placings from 11 starts.

The four-year-old gelding by Zizou has a fine association with Blake Spriggs with two wins from two starts, notably both those starts were at Taree; an advantage that Bashford believes should not be overlooked by punters.

“The track (Taree) can be tricky for newcomers and Ever So Natural has the home track form. Scott Olson (Track Manager) has done a fantastic job and providing it doesn’t rain, the surface should be perfect.”

Last Sunday, trainer Greg Bennett provided the quinella of the $100,000 H&NWA Country Championship Qualifier at Scone, a feat that could be repeated byBashford’s two runners.

This weekend’s meeting is Taree-Wingham Race Club’s richest ever raceday and is complemented by a big marketing push from Racing NSW with a Fashions on the Field, children’s entertainment, live music and a free BBQ for the first 300 paying customers through the gate.

“There is a lot of excitement around the area and it should be a fantastic day,” said Taree-Wingham Race Club’s CEO, Brian Leggett.

The 2016Championships will be held on Saturday April 2 and 9 at Royal Randwick, where the 12 grand finals of Australian Thoroughbred racing will be centre stage as well as the second running of the Provincial andCountry Championships Finals.
